IMS Cape, supplier of electrical equipment to mining, manufacturing and municipal entities and a division of Zest Electric Motors, recently manufactured, installed and commissioned three standby generator sets in various sections of Unilever’s manufacturing facility on the East Rand.
The order, worth in the region of R1.4-million, comprised 100 kVA, 200 kVA and 800 kVA encapsulated units. The 100 kVA and 200 kVA sets were housed in weather-proof and sound-proof canopies to a limit of 75 dB(A) at 7 metres, while the 800 kVA generator set was installed in a purpose-built ISO 6 metre shipping container, also soundproof to a limit of 75 dB(A) at 7 metres. All three units are weatherproof.
The self contained IMS generator sets were supplied with electrical changeover switchgear, each with its own on-board fuel and exhaust systems, and electrical controls.
“As one of only a handful of local companies capable of offering a complete turnkey solution in this arena, we were able to produce the three generator sets to Unilever’s exact specifications and within its specified delivery deadline,” Bruce McCracken, sales manager at IMS Cape, says. “What differentiates us in the marketplace is this ability to offer a complete solution in terms of interfacing with and complementing customer requirements, with standby generators from 20 kVA up to 3 000 kVA, as well as multiple systems. Aside from the imported engines and alternators, we manufacture the entire system as an in-house function.”
Unilever’s Jannie Heath says the generator sets were required to provide standby power for newly constructed sections of the manufacturing facility in key areas. The 800 kVA unit has been deployed at the cold store to ensure uninterrupted cooling of products in the event of a power outage.
